Soil Physics is an important discipline that deals with physical properties and processes of soil for assessment of its behavior under natural and managed conditions. It applies principle of physics, physical chemistry, engineering and metrology for addressing the problems and issues of hydrology, ecology, agriculture and engineering. To meet the emerging challenges in these fields, PCRWR has established a Soil Physics Laboratory at its Headquarters Islamabad. The laboratory is equipped with facilities of determining soil physical, hydraulic and chemical properties. The equipment commissioned in the laboratory include Soil Moisture Extractor Apparatus for developing Soil Moisture Retention Curve from 1 bar to 15 bar, and Heins Apparatus for the retention curve from 0 to 0.2 bar, soil texture analysis by hydrometer and pipette methods, soil texture analysis by mechanical shaker, soil chemical analysis by getting soil saturated extract, Infiltrometers tests etc. Time Domain Reflectometer for manual as well as automatic real time monitoring of soil moisture profile at multiple sites at desired time span and interval is also working in the laboratory. PCRWR has also developed a Laboratory Manual for facilitation of relevant researchers and technicians.
